In selecting a baitcasting reel, the most important feature is the backlash resistance. A Good baitcast reel will have some type of magnetic or centrifugal brake system to keep backlashing to a minimum. A high gear ratio is high gear is not a requirement for some fish species like walleye, because fast retrieves are seldom needed. A good trolling reel feature that you will want to look for is a line counter. Most middle to high end trolling baitcast reels will have this option. This is feature in my opinion, is a absolute must if you want to maintain consistency when you are attempting to develop a trolling pattern to catch fish.

A trolling bastcasting reel with a line counter makes it much easier to reset your line at the same distance after catching a fish. For intendance if you were to purchase a trolling bait casting reel with no line counter you would have to count the passes of the level wind bar or somehow mark the line. And if you have ever been trolling without a line counter this process take much more concentration. I would rather be concentrating on my bait selection then constantly counting my line distance.
