Shopping for fishing rod and reel combos outfits at a well stocked tackle shop can be a confusing experience. It doesn’t matter whether you are looking for saltwater rod and reel combos or freshwater rod and reel combos You’ll see rods and reels of all sizes, colors and prices, with no explanation as to which rod goes with which reel or what out-fit it is intended for what purpose. Unless you are lucky enough to find a savvy sales clerk, you’ll have to figure things out for yourself.

Your selection depends on fishing rod and reel combos of factors: The size of the fish you expect to catch, the size of the baits you’ll be using and the type of cover in which you’ll be fishing.

With a light spinning outfit with 6-pond line, you could land a 20lb pike in unobstructed water. But you wouldn’t be able to toss a heavy lure with such a light outfit and, in heavy weeds, the fish would make short work of the light line.
If you do many different kinds of fishing, you’ll probably need several different outfits. We will explain what gear is best for your style of fishing as we move along in our website.

Spincasting fishing rod and reel combos are often the best choice of beginning anglers because it’s in expensive and almost impossible to backlash. The enclosed spool prevents loops of line from falling off the reel and causing snarls. But spincasters don’t cast as well as spinning gear because of the extra line friction, and they often have poor drag systems that can result in line break-offs.

Spinning fishing rod and reel combos are the best choice for casting light lures. They also excel for distance casting because the line flows easily off the open face reel. When you flip the bail, the line comes off the end of the spool in loose coil, so the rod must have large guides to reduce line friction. Because there is not a rotating spool, spinning rod and reel combos cannot backlash, but twisted line can still cause nasty snarls.

Fly fishing rod reel combos are needed to cast heavy fly line, which, in turn, propels the nearly weightless fly. Picking up and casting heavy line requires a long rod, usually from 8 to 9 ft in length. A long rod also helps in controlling the line and playing fish. Fly rod and reel combinations carry a weight designation, usually from 3 to 10 weight, that matches the weight of the line they’re designed to cast.

Trolling fishing rod and reel combos have the large capacity reels for long line trolling or downrigger fishing. The reels are not designed for casting.  Trolling rods  may be short and stiff for trolling heavy baits, or long and flexible for downrigger fishing. Although sensitivity is not an issue, many anglers prefer graphite trolling rods because they telegraph the action of the lure better then fiberglass.
